As I read through this article it seems as though to much emphasis was being placed on who was right and who was wrong about their theory. In all actuality theories are evolutionary just as learners in adult education are; therefore, all of the theories were probably applicable during the time in which it was established, for the most part. Now Candy comes along and writes this statement in which I agree wi th, wholeheartedly. I do so, because I can think of instances were I prefer to be a self-directed learned, but thats only when I want to know something miscellaneous; however, primarily, by nature, I am a dependent learner with a concrete sequential learning style. I need explicit directions before feeling comfortable with going forth with a task. To me self-directed learning puts me in the mindset of on line courses, in which, I would never subject myself to, unless it was absolutely necessary. I need the teacher directed, concrete experience of being in a classroom and learning from discussion, feedback and interpretation, something that I just do not feel I would get from and on line course per se. Insight for me is the mere fact that the methodology behind teaching adult learners is so widely debated. I never actually took the time to think about how someone should educate me as an adult. However, now that I am an adult learner, I am extremely thankful that someone did take the time to develop theories on how adult learner should learn. And I am even more elated because they are all closely knit which gives me confidence in the fact that the general picture is effective. I feel challenged to keep up with the latest research on theories behind adult education to see if modern day theorist are relating their theories to the â€Å"fathers and grandfathers† of adult education. As I venture out into the world as an adult educator, I will incorporate different practices and theories and note which ones were most effective and for what type of learner. Bibliography Candy, P. ‘Fast and Furious’. Not only is this phrase the title of an incredibly successful, action-packed film, but it also briefly outlines the stereotypical traits associated with those in Generation Z. People in Generation Z in the Western world, which today range from around 11 to 20 years of age, have lived their entire lives in a technologically advanced society where mountains of information are at their fingertips. Due to the instantaneousness of current technology, Gen-Zers expect everything to be immediate, making them notorious for their impatience. This cutting-edge technology also means that Generation Z is very interconnected. Even when at home or on holiday, they can still be communicating with their peers. The media is defined by the Google Dictionary (2014) as â€Å"the main means of mass communication† and encompasses the internet, radio, newspaper, television etc. Due to recent advancements in technology, society can now be even more easily influenced by the media. Prior to the existence of the mass media, our ideas of beauty were restricted to what we saw in our own communities. We were not told by the media that women must have tiny waists and tan skin, and men must be tall with giant muscles to be good-looking, acceptable even. Through social networking sites, advertisements, films etc. the media bombards us with clips and images of these ‘stunning’ people, gradually manipulating Generation Z’s sense of what is beautiful and healthy. The age bracket that Gen-Zers are currently in (11-20 years old) makes them especially susceptible to the media and what you supposedly must look like to be pretty. The media exploits Generation Z’s interconnectedness and impressionability and uses it to it’s own avail, because all the media cares about is making money. Not only in the business world, is motivation everywhere. Parents always motivate their children to study hard by offering small presents. For example, I remember when I was young, my parents often rewarded me by visiting Ocean Park if I achieved good results in the exams. This worked and I was motivated to study harder and harder as I really wanted to go to Ocean Park. It is the same in the business world. If we want to motivate the employees to improve their performance, we have to give them some rewards. For example, the Incentive Compensation Program implemented in some companies has good effects. In this program, workers who have excellent performance can be rewarded a certain amount of bonus. Apart from bonus, I think good welfare systems, good working environment, good relationship with colleagues are ways to motivate the workers. All the above motivation we have talked about is extrinsic. It is provided by the third party, i. e. comes from outside of the individual. Besides extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation is also a way to motivate the workers. This refers to motivation that is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on any external source. In fact, people who are intrinsically motivated are more likely to improve their skills, and hence the performance. In my childhood, apart from my parents’ reward systems, I was also motivated by myself. I liked Mathematics so I put much effort on it and did a lot of Mathematics exercise. This was due to my own interest. In the workplace, if the workers enjoy the task, they will exert their best effort in order to achieve excellent. No matter it is about studies or careers, intrinsic motivation is important. To conclude, motivation is everywhere in the world.
